Yes we will be outreaching to small business about Raise the Wage in San JoseFeel free to invite your friend and family who are also interested in getting involved and helping! We are here to educate and reach out to more community members about the proposition because our opposers have 1.4 million dollars to spend against us. We want to inform our community on how Measure D will affect us all directly in so many positive ways; empowering the people and our community. It's time to change the minimum wage in San Jose; $8/hr is not enough, it's time for $10/hr! -San Jose community members & supporters

Come to the KICK OFF!!
KICK OFF FOR THE FALL CAMPAING
6 P.M. TUESDAY JULY 31
LABOR TEMPLE HALL “A”
2102 ALMADEN ROAD
Why increase the minimum wage in San Jose to $10 an hour?
The prices of gas, food and health care and other necessities
have risen over the past four years while the wage of our community’s lowest
paid workers haven’t budged. An increase in the minimum wage would help
low-wage workers make up for lost round and boost consumer spending. Putting a
little more money in the hands of those who greatly need it and will spend much
of it locally is good public policy.
It’s the right thing to do.
Bring a friend, bring your family.
Let’s make San Jose a better place to live, work, and play.
Please RSVP to Derecka@atwork.org

Make sure to RSVP
It will be a party! Meet community members, get questions answered, and have a good time!
"DON'T FEED GREED"
DOES DARDEN CEO CLARENCE OTIS FEED GREED?
As CEO of Darden Restaurants- owner of Capital Grille, Red
Lobster, Olive Garden, Longhorn Steakhouse, and other chains- Clarence Otis is
compensated with a cool $8.5 million, while Darden employees earn as little as
$2.13 per hour and do not have paid sick days. Workers at some Darden
Restaurants report that they are not fully compensated for their work and have
suffered racial discrimination.
Corporate executives take care of their own.
Otis is also a member of the Board of Directors of Verizon
Communications, where 45,000 workers are fighting to hold on to their place in
the middle class. While workers are told to take cuts in pay and benefits
totaling $10,000 per year. Otis and the rest of Verizon’s board gave the
company’s CEO a 200% raise, to $23 million.
ASK THE MANAGER OF THIS RESTAURANT TO TELL CLARENCE OTIS:
DON’T FEED GREED!

Walmart protest in LA
On June 30th, 2012 thousands of people marched through Chinatown in Los Angeles, California; protesting to urge Wal-Mart to stop invading Los Angeles, respect workers, and to say "No" to Low Wage jobs which diminish local businesses.

Some may wonder how this protest against Wal-Mart in LA ties in to the proposition Raise the Wage in San Jose. As one can see, cities all around the United States are fighting back, practicing real democracy, standing up to big corporations like Wal-Mart and asking businesses to pay a higher wage.
As mentioned in an earlier posting on this blog, we stand for the bigger picture also. It's not simply about raising our wage in San Jose it's about stepping forward in ending a cycle which we have allowed to take control over our lifestyles, views, feelings, and over all our rights.
If the proposition for Raise the Wage in San Jose goes through on November 6th of this year; 44 thousand people the first month of 2013 will be impacted. If it goes through, 80 thousand people will be impacted in 2013.
San Jose is taking a stance. If we can do it here, other cities will manage to do so also.
We must prove to other cities that our power is still strong, and that united we can accomplish our goals.
